The grit movement started a few years ago when psychologist Angela Duckworth studied people in challenging situations, including National Spelling Bee participants, rookie teachers in tough neighborhoods, and West Point cadets. Her research suggested that grit was a more accurate predictor of success than social intelligence, good looks, physical health, or IQ. Duckworth explains the premise in this short Ted Talk.

When EJ Aragon misses a free throw, he doesn’t dwell on it. He steps back up to the line, takes a breath, and tries again. The same grit was displayed on his journey to the 2024 Elks Hoop Shoot National Finals. After losing at the District level in his first year, then losing at the Regional level in his second year, EJ didn’t give up. He came back, determined to make it to Chicago. Though he faced numerous setbacks on the journey, including a broken thumb, EJ accomplished his goal of competing on the Hoop Shoot’s biggest stage. Each year, the six Hoop Shoot National Champions will have their names listed alongside their picture in a brand-new digital exhibit in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. Additionally, two of the Frank Hise National Champions are in attendance when the Hall of Fame inductees are honored at the Enshrinement Ceremony.
The Elks Hoop Shoot is the proud sponsor of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s annual Morgan Wootten Lifetime Achievement Award. The Hall of Fame awards two Wootten Awards annually to boys and girls high school coaches who have dedicated their lives to the betterment of student athletes. The award is named for Morgan Wootten, a legendary high school basketball coach enshrined at the Hall of Fame. Meet the recipients here.
